After decades of attempts, Wishing Tree Park will officially open in West Carson on Thursday.

The grand opening will happen at 20400 Budlong Ave. from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The ceremony will kick off at 5:30 p.m.

Mark Glassik with the L.A. County Parks and Rec told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian how the park got its name.

“Over the years, especially after the 1990s, there were a number of unsuccessful attempts to develop the park and in one case, there was actually a groundbreaking,” he said. “At that groundbreaking, [a]number of trees were planted and kids in the neighborhood would actually post little wishes on the tree wishing for a park to open one day. So we're finally able to say that those wishes are coming true.”

The eight-and-a-half-acre park includes walking trails, exercise areas, a baseball/softball field, a basketball court, a playground, and a memorial plaza. The plaza, according to Glassik, “pays tribute to all of the folks who fought for this park that unfortunately have passed.”
