SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. (KNX) — A woman has been arrested in connection with allegedly striking a civilian and a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy before fleeing the scene Wednesday night. Investigators said the woman was involved in an altercation with the civilian victim prior to the collision, which resulted in his death.
Deputies from the Temple Station responded to a call shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday to a parking lot attached to a shopping center in the 9600 block of Garvey Avenue. There, they saw a man and a woman arguing, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department said.
Deputies proceeded to detain the man, at which point, the woman, believed to be in her 30s, got into her car and intentionally drove toward them and the detainee, according to the department.
The woman's car collided with a patrol vehicle, struck one deputy and the man, believed to be in his 50s. She then led deputies on a chase. During the chase, her vehicle became inoperable, at which point, deputies placed her under arrest.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision. The injured deputy was transported to a local hospital to be treated, but has since been released and is expected to recover.
The sheriff's department has not yet disclosed the identity of the alleged hit-and-run perpetrator.
