Man killed while working on on L.A. Metro Purple Line extension project identified

LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Authorities on Tuesday identified a worker who was struck and killed by a construction train at the site of the future Wilshire/La Brea Station on L.A. Metro’s Purple Line Extension Project.

Alejandro Zuniga, 33, of L.A., died at the scene, according to the county coroner’s office.

Firefighters with the L.A. Fire Department went to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. on March 23 to the area of Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue on reports of a person caught under a train. That person was determined to be Zuniga.

"I can't imagine a job more noble than building a project that will help millions of people get to work, school and countless other important destinations," Metro CEO Stephanie N. Wiggins said in a statement. "This is a tragedy beyond words and the entire LA Metro family and Metro Board of Directors offers its deepest condolences to the worker's family, friends and colleagues."

L.A. Metro is still investigating the incident with assistance from other regulatory agencies. Construction trains are used to transport materials to job sites along the 3.9-mile extension of the D Line from Western Avenue to La Cienega Boulevard, beenath Wilshire.
