CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Those living in a household that’s partially vaccinated against COVID-19 may have some questions about keeping their loved ones safe, and a local infectious disease expert has answers.
Dr. Jonathan Pinsky, Medical Director of Infection Control at Edward Hospital, said vaccinated or not, mask wearing and social distancing should remain top priorities.
"As long as there’s cases of COVID in the community, the recommendation is still to wear a mask in public and when around others who are not in your household," he said. "That provides protection against you getting infected; and if you are going to be around other people who are not immunized then there's less of a chance that you can then transmit it onto someone else."
Aside from safety measures, Dr. Pinsky said the easiest way to protect you and your family is to ensure everyone gets vaccinated as quickly as possible.
"What is notable is that the patients getting admitted to the hospital - they all have one common thread: they are unimmunized. That to me is the number one vulnerability," he said. “We’re seeing very few patients who are over 65 getting admitted for COVID-19. That’s because there’s a very high level of immunization in that population.”
Dr. Pinsky added that despite new concerns over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, safe and effective shots will be the only way to end the pandemic.
