One out of every five Americans at or above the age of 65 is currently employed.
Those numbers were revealed in a new study by the Pew Research Center, and the 2023 tally is almost double the total from 35 years ago.
On the positive side, older workers are earning more than they used to and seem happier with their roles in the workplace.
The typical worker aged 65 or older earned about $22 per hour in 2022. That’s an increase from $13 per hour in 1987. The study reports that 62% of older workers are full-time employees as well, a 15% increase over the 1987 total.
Older workers were also found to be more likely to say they are satisfied with their employment than younger workers.
Going hand-in-hand with those findings, older workers are also more likely to say their job is “enjoyable” or “fulfilling” all or most of the time and less likely to consider it a source of stress.
The study surveyed both full- and part-time workers.
