Back-to-school season is in full swing and as students gear up for a new semester on campus, many parents may be wondering if their kids are really ready to live on their own.

New findings from the American Cleaning Institute and Wakefield Research suggest that many college students struggle to navigate a critical responsibility of living on their own: cleaning.

"There's so much to learn when you hit the college campus. Cleaning on your own is often one of those lessons," Brian Sansoni, senior vice president of the American Cleaning Institute, said in a statement.

According to the survey, nearly all college students (92%) recognize that a clean room helps them feel their best, both mentally and physically. However, only one in four students feels completely prepared to clean on their own upon first arriving to college. The rest aren't really sure where to start.

Many students cite a lack of motivation (53%) and time (50%) as the top two challenges for cleaning, according to the survey. Some students say a lack of cleaning supplies or cleaning knowledge prevents them from keeping tidy. Others say their roommate is to blame.

According to the survey, 71% of survey respondents with roommates argue over how to clean. Disagreements over cleaning only arise from time to time for most students but for 2%, they happen "all the time."

In addition to fighting with suitemates, messy rooms can also take a toll on a student's love life. According to the survey, nearly half (49%) of students said they would be very or somewhat likely to walk out on a date if they saw that their significant other's room was messy.

Students are reminded that it is easy for germs to spread on college campuses due to the high number of people living and learning in close quarters. To help, the American Cleaning Institute created the "College Student's Guide to Cleaning," which explains proper cleaning, laundry and hygiene practices.

The survey was conducted among 500 U.S. college undergraduates between June 9 and 17.
