If you ask most parents when someone is too old for trick or treating during Halloween, you won’t get a straight answer. In Chicago, parents said the cutoff should range from anywhere to 10 years old to high schoolers.
“It seems like there's two groups of kids I see out,” said one parent. “There's kind of young kids that go out early, get some candy, go down a street or two and come back; and then there's older kids, maybe middle school, that go out with their friends, and I don't know, they seem to have fun.”
Another said the cutoff is sometime in high school.
“I would probably say if you're old enough to drive, you're too old to be running around [and] getting candy.”
One woman said high schoolers would be well past the cutoff in her book.
“I think we definitely see through elementary school, probably late elementary school … fifth [or] sixth grade is where it stops, so under 10?”
Most parents and caretakers, though, said it doesn't matter how old you are — as long as you're having fun.
“Just letting people come out as they are for what they wanna do,” said one woman. “If they like candy and want to spend their evening walking around the neighborhood respectfully [and] calmly enough to make way for the younger kids, I think that's really great.”
