Thousands were left without power after the storm’s destruction, which took down buildings and washed out important roadways, leaving at least 35 residents dead.
The result is residents of Asheville left stranded and the city cut off from important necessities.
“This is an unprecedented tragedy that requires an unprecedented response,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said after ordering the National Guard to the area to fly food, water and other needed supplies by helicopter to the area.
Over 500 North Carolina National Guard members have been activated for Hurricane Helene aid.
The storm dropped over 30 inches of rain on some areas of the state, according to USA Today, and at least 200 of the state’s roads remained closed as of Sunday morning.
Monetarily, damage totals have varied wildly, but even the most conservative estimates range in the 20 to 34 billion dollar range, while the high end goes well above $100 billion.
