Wednesday marks two years since George Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

It was Memorial Day 2020, when Chauvin held his knee to Floyd's neck during an arrest outside of Cup Foods, where Floyd had tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill.

National civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented the Floyd family during Chauvin's murder trial, talked with WCCO's Chad Hartman about the lasting impact of this tragic piece of U.S. history.

“George Floyd’s legacy, I believe in many ways, will always represent the unjust killings of marginalized people of color, especially Black people,” Crump tells WCCO Radio.

Crump says the biggest positive outcomes since the Floyd killing have been the bans on police choke holds and no-knock warrants that several states have implemented including in Minneapolis.

Crump also says there was a much-needed shift in police accountability.

“That's not something that should be taken likely or for granted in America, because so often when you have all the evidence of the world that police unjustly kill the marginalized person, especially a Black person, there seems to be no consequences,” Crump said.

Also Wednesday, the White House is expected to announce an executive order on policing. The executive order comes after bipartisan negotiations in Congress to reform policing failed last year.

According to CBS News, the executive order will include sections on establishment of an accountability database of officers fired for misconduct and a ban on chokeholds and a restriction on no knock warrants at the federal level. Anti-bias training is expected to be included as well.
