A bill that could go a long way towards expanding the knowledge base doctors have on marijuana’s medical benefits has made its way to the desk of President Joe Biden.

The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act made its way through both the House and Senate with bipartisan support and will pave the way for medications derived from cannabis to be more easily accessed for research purposes.

Under the new legislation, any medical or osteopathic school, research institution, manufacturer or practitioner with a Schedule I registration will be allowed to cultivate their own marijuana crops for the purposes of research.

The Department of Health and Human Services will also be required to revisit policies that hinder cannabis research utilizing crops grown where the cultivation of marijuana is legal.

And it will allow state-licensed physicians to discuss the benefits and risks of medical marijuana use without violating the Controlled Substances Act.

According to Bloomberg, Biden is expanded to sign the legislation and usher in a new era of marijuana study.
