SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Just after 2 p.m. on Friday search and rescue teams found the body of a missing 16-year-old girl who was last seen Wednesday night.
Trinity Backus was last seen around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday walking away from a residence in the 18000 block of Kentucky Ravine Road. She was last seen wearing a maroon robe and pajama pants. The teen was around 5 feet 9 inches with red hair.
The Nevada County Sheriff's Office along with several other agencies had been searching for Backus since then.
Throughout Thursday and into the night an airplane equipped with infrared technology was used to methodically search the area.
When authorities managed to locate Trinity on Friday she was about half a mile north of the residence she was last seen at in a very heavily wooded river drainage area.
According to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, there is nothing so far in the investigation that points to it being a suspicious death.
Her cause of death is not yet known, pending investigation by the coroner.
"We have been in communication with the family and extend our deepest condolences to them as they work through this loss," said the Sheriff's Office in a post on Friday. "We ask that you please respect their privacy."
