In a move no one saw coming, Chick-fil-A has announced that it will look to test its first-ever plant-based sandwich that will feature cauliflower in place of its typical chicken breast.
While the new sandwich for the fast-food giant may look like the original chicken sandwich, there is no meat present, only a pressure-cooked piece of cauliflower, the company shared in a press release.
“Cauliflower is the hero of our new sandwich, and it was inspired by our original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich,” Leslie Neslage, director of menu and packaging at Chick-fil-A said in a statement. “Guests told us they wanted to add more vegetables into their diets, and they wanted a plant-forward entrée that tasted uniquely Chick-fil-A. Our new sandwich is made with the highest quality ingredients and whole vegetables, and we hope it offers customers another reason to dine at Chick-fil-A.”
The sandwich will debut on Monday at select locations in Denver; Charleston, South Carolina; and the Greensboro-Triad region of North Carolina, the company shared.
Fast food companies continue to dive into the plant-based arena, as several have moved to offer meatless options. Among the most notable to do so was Burger King, which offers plant-based substitutes on its menu.
However, the decision from Chick-fil-A to join the field wasn’t rushed by its competitors, as the company says it has been developing its new sandwich for nearly four years.
And while Burger King, Dunkin’, and other chains have chosen meat alternative companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods to develop their menu items, Chick-fil-A decided to take a different route.
“We explored every corner of the plant-based space in search of the perfect centerpiece for our plant-forward entrée,” Chick-fil-A Culinary Lead Stuart Tracy said in a statement. “Time and time again, we kept returning to cauliflower as the base of our sandwich.”
The choice of cauliflower is popular among those who look for substitutes when it comes to meat and is often used to replace chicken.
The popular chicken wing interview show Hot Ones substitutes the vegetable when they host celebrity guests who don’t eat meat. Chicken wing establishment Buffalo Wild Wings and numerous other bars also offer fried cauliflower smothered in their sauces, as well.
While the sandwich is not yet national, it could be no time before the fast-food chain decides to bring cauliflower to every location.
