LOS ANGELES (KNX) – While the next year’s Oscars’ host has not been announced, don’t expect Chris Rock to be in the running.
The comedian, who made headlines at the 2022 ceremony when Will Smith slapped him, revealed during a show in Arizona that he was asked to host next year’s ceremony.
According to Arizona Central, he said returning to the Oscars would be returning to a scene of the crime, adding that it would “be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson to go back to the restaurant.”
Rock also he was offered a Super Bowl commercial, but said he turned that down as well.
Following the incident, Will Smith – who went on to win Best Actor that night – resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and was banned from attending any event sponsored by the organization for 10 years.
On July 29, Smith apologized to Rock in a video posted on YouTube. In the video, Smith revealed he did reach out to the comedian, but that the “message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and that when he is he will reach out.”
“I will say to you, Chris, I apologize,” he said. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”
Rock hosted the ceremony in 2005 and 2016.
