Actor Chuck Norris, best known for playing the title role in the TV series “Walker, Texas Ranger” for nine seasons starting in 1993, died Thursday, according to his family.
“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” said the caption of a Friday post on Norris’ Instagram page. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”
Oklahoma native Carlos Ray “Chuck” Norris was a real-life martial arts champion in addition to being an actor, Variety reported. He was a black belt in judo, 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, 5th degree black belt in Karate, 8th degree black belt in Taekwondo, 9th degree black belt in Tang Soo Do and 10th degree black belt in Chun Kuk Do. He also served in the Air Force.
Before taking on the role of Texas Ranger Cordell Walker, Norris appeared with Bruce Lee in 1972 film “The Way of the Dragon” and many action films throughput the 1970s and 1980s. Starting in the 2000s, he became well known to new generations as an internet meme.
“Chuck Norris has come to represent the epitome of manliness and awesomeness in culture, mostly due to his roles as a fighter in movies and TV shows,” according to Know Your Meme. “The meme Chuck Norris Facts plays off of this, as all the ‘facts’ deal with Norris’ ability to do anything because of his manliness.”
TMZ reported earlier this week that Norris was admitted to a hospital in Kuai, Hawaii, after an emergency. His family confirmed that Norris had been recently hospitalized. They also noted his reputation as a martial artist and symbol of strength in their tribute.
“To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” it read. “He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved.
Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”
Variety said that Norris was also a “longtime supporter of conservative politicians,” and that he wrote books related to conservative and Christian themes. He was married to Dianne Holechek from 1958 until their divorce in 1988. Norris is survived by his second wife, Gena O’Kelley, two sons, Eric and Mike, daughters Dakota, Danilee and Dina and a grandchildren.
“While our hearts are broken, we are deeply grateful for the life he lived and for the unforgettable moments we were blessed to share with him. The love and support he received from fans around the world meant so much to him, and our family is truly thankful for it. To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends,” said the Instagram message. “As we grieve this loss, we kindly ask for privacy for our family during this time. Thank you for loving him with us.”
