According to figures from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), teenagers have crash rates almost four times higher than older drivers.
Part of the risk, IIHS says, is due to teens having less experience behind the wheel, as well as youths being more easily distracted.
Consumer Reports and IIHS recently released a list of safe, affordable and reliable vehicles for teen drivers.
In a release, IIHS president David Harkey encourages parents to purchase a new or used vehicle that will protect their teens in case of a crash.
The list includes 61 used vehicle models priced $6,500-$20,000 and 29 new models ranging from $20,000 to $40,000.
In a release, Consumer Reports spokesperson Jennifer Stockburger said the list was released top help parents identify vehicles that met safety and reliability standards, while staying within a specific budget.
