Elon Musk is once again taking backlash after tweeting on Sunday that he wants Dr. Anthony Fauci to be prosecuted for his involvement in the COVID-19 pandemic. Fauci has served as the chief medical adviser to the president, helping lead the nation through the pandemic.
Musk’s tweet said that his “pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci.” Later he added a meme showing Fauci telling President Joe Biden to have “Just one more lockdown, my king.”
However, Musk’s tweet did not receive the response that he might have been hoping for, as numerous senators jumped to Fauci’s defense, criticizing the Twitter CEO over the comment.
“It’s America. You can select any pronouns you damn well please. But Anthony Fauci has likely saved more human lives than any living person in the world. Shame on you,” Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) shared on Twitter.
Other lawmakers and well-known figures also spoke up for Fauci. Among those to voice support included Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who said Musk should “just leave a good man alone,” Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), and others.
Of course, some expected voices did speak up in agreement with Musk, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who said that she affirms Musk’s pronouns, and other well-known critics of Fauci.
“Fauci’s resignation should not prevent a full-throated investigation into the origins of the pandemic. He must be required to testify under oath regarding any discussions he participated in concerning the Wuhan lab leak. His policies destroyed lives,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) Tweeted.
Musk has been ever critical on the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in the early days calling concern for the virus “dumb.” He has also done away with Twitter’s COVID misinformation policies since stepping into his new role.
Fauci will to step down from his position at the end of the year after decades of service. As Republicans continue to call for investigations into his work, he has shared he is not worried.
While speaking before members of the press in his last meeting, Fauci shared that politics don’t matter at the end of the day, he only wants people to be healthy.
“As a physician, it pains me because I don’t want to see anybody get infected. I don’t want to see anybody hospitalized. And I don’t want to see anybody die from COVID. Whether you’re a far-right Republican or a far-left Democrat doesn’t make any difference to me,” Fauci said.
