After cyberhackers launched a successful ransomware attack that shut down the largest fuel pipeline in the U.S., the criminal gang known as DarkSide claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they only did it for the money.
That statement led to speculation whether Colonial Pipeline officials paid a ransom to resolve the situation. Multiple reports say the company did hand over several million dollars to the hackers, despite the FBI urging victimized companies to avoid meeting the financial demands of cybercriminals.
On Thursday, President Biden declined to comment when asked if Colonial Pipeline paid a ransom. CBS News Political Correspondent Ed O'Keefe discussed the latest developments with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
Incidentally, a unit of Toshiba said Friday that its European system was hit by a similar attack, with DarkSide again said to be responsible.
