Hunter Biden’s legal trial began on Tuesday with opening statements as the president’s son faces three gun charges over his alleged purchase of a weapon while using drugs.
But while the trial is being prosecuted as the U.S. v. Biden, it also has an underlying Biden v. Biden storyline encapsulated in family drama.
The trial will likely see Biden called to the stand to testify for the defense and the prosecution.
But among the others who are also expected to testify includes Biden’s ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, and his late brother Beau’s widow, Hallie Biden -- with whom Hunter had a romantic relationship -- according to court filings and opening statements.
While both Hallie Biden and Buhle have stayed out of the spotlight, they will likely testify about Hunter’s crack cocaine addiction after being subpoenaed by the prosecution.
Other Bidens that could testify include Naomi Biden, the daughter of Buhle and Hunter, and James “Jimmy” Biden, the president’s brother. Both are expected to appear for the defense.
Jimmy and Naomi are expected to testify about Hunter’s state of mind when he bought a gun in Wilmington.
With the family taking Hunter’s side after he and Buhle divorced in 2017, the testimony is expected to stir up past drama involving the president’s family.
During opening statements on Tuesday, Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, repeatedly deflected blame towards Hallie Biden, who he was in a romantic relationship with at the time.
The two had both fallen into addiction at the same time, but she had gotten sober two months prior, according to the prosecution, and Lowell said she “freaked out” when she found the gun and threw it in a dumpster.
The attorney added that it was “Hallie, not Hunter,” who threw the gun where it could be easily found, deflecting blame from his client.
The trial comes as President Joe Biden continues to campaign for a second term, but members of his family showed up to support Hunter Biden on his first two days in court.
