The FBI fired an agent who failed to investigate former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar and allegedly lied about it, according to The Washington Post.

It comes months after it was reported that the FBI mishandled the investigation into the doctor who pleaded guilty three years ago to sexually abusing underage gymnasts who were his patients.

Michael Langeman has been identified as the fired FBI agent. He served as a supervisory special agent in the FBI's Indianapolis office when gymnast McKayla Maroney was interviewed in 2015 about Nassar's alleged conduct.

Officials said FBI firings are rare for the most part.

Langeman has declined to comment on his termination.

On Wednesday, Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney will testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee's first panel on the FBI investigation.

In 2017, Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in prison on state charges. The following year, he was sentenced to up to 175 years on federal charges. It is estimated that more than 300 gymnasts alleged abuse against the former doctor.
