Five people were injured when gunfire broke out during a crowded homecoming event at Morgan State University, a historically Black college in northeast Baltimore.

The gunfire happened around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday outside of an auditorium where the annual coronation of Miss and Mr. Morgan State University, a popular homecoming week event, had just ended, WBAL reported.

The gunfire prompted police to warn of an "active shooter" situation and issue an order for those on campus and in the area of Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center to shelter in place.

"We were outside of our coronation, basically they let out and everybody was leaving, and then we see two gunshots hit the front window and everyone just started running," a student identified only as David told WBAL. "It was chaos."

The victims – four men and one woman, ages 18 to 22 – were located in the area of a campus residential building and a fine arts facility, The Baltimore Sun reported. All five were rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Four of the victims are students at the university, according to police.

A responding SWAT team cleared several buildings and searched the area for hours, but found no sign of the suspect, who remains at large. The shelter in place order was lifted around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after investigators determined there was no longer an active shooter situation.

Police could not confirm whether there was one shooter or multiple shooters, and no suspect description was available.

Classes at Morgan State are canceled Wednesday as an investigation continues.
