Recall documentation posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that the issue increases the risk of a crash for the best-selling vehicle in the United States.
The recall potentially affects certain models of Ford’s F-150 pickup trucks, the car manufacturer shared with the NHTSA.
The problem is a result of a temporary loss in signal between a transmission speed sensor and a powertrain control computer. The temporary loss of connection could result in the downshift to first gear that could see drivers lose control of their truck “regardless of vehicle speed.”
If your vehicle is affected by the recall, you will receive a letter in the mail by July 5.
The recall notice shared that owners will likely be advised to take their trucks to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the powertrain control module’s software updated.
The software update is expected to be ready by the third quarter of 2024, according to a Ford spokesperson.
The Ford recall number is 24S37.
