Ford Motor Co. has announced a recall involving its Maverick pickup truck, for a safety issue.

Ford said it is recalling 243,000 Maverick trucks in the U.S. because the tail lights may not illuminate, and that can increase the risk of a crash.

The automaker said a computer can falsely detect too much current on one or both of the tail lamps, causing them to stay dark while the trucks are on the road.

Ford said it has no reports of any crashes or injuries due to the problem. Headlights, turn signals and brake lights in these vehicles will still work.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTSA) says dealers will update software to fix the problem at no cost to owners.

The recall only covers certain Maverick pickups, from the 2022 through 2024 model years. Notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners starting May 20, 2024.
