Ford is recalling 316 thousand Mustang Mach E electric vehicles globally because of what it calls an “unexpected lock-out condition.”
“If the 12-volt battery is discharged below 8.4-volts at key-off and if the driver or front passenger exit the front doors using the mechanical inside release handles, the doors may remain locked when they are re-closed,” says a statement provided by Ford spokesman Mike Levine. “This may result in an unexpected lock-out condition for the driver and front passenger without the immediate ability to unlock the vehicle.”
People who are in the vehicle when this happens can exit using the mechanical inside release handles. But if the doors close, it’s possible somebody who can’t access the handles, like a child, could become trapped inside.
“This could result in a serious injury, especially in hot weather,” says the Ford statement.
No accidents or injuries have been reported, according to Ford.
Levine says the problem is “very rare” and only recently began showing up in older vehicles. The recall impacts 2021 through 25 model year Mach E’s, essentially the entire production run of the vehicle.
Ford has a software fix, but it will require a visit to a dealer for service. Owners will receive instructions in the mail.
Dealers have been told to suspend test drives or deliveries of the Ford Mustang Mach E until the software fix can be implemented.
