WASHINGTON (KNX) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti appeared Tuesday morning before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations for his long-awaited confirmation hearing to the post of President Biden's ambassador to India.

The mayor is fielding questions from senators, including Cory Booker (D.-New Jersey), who was acquainted with Garcetti from the years they spent together as Rhodes scholars at the University of Oxford. Booker also campaigned for Garcetti in the 2013 mayoral race.
Garcetti will likely face a much tougher line of questioning from Republicans on the committee, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R.-Texas).
Once the hearing is finished, senators submit their questions for the record, allowing them to follow up on anything not covered on Tuesday. Senators will then schedule a vote to report Garcetti's nomination to the general body, after which the full Senate will vote on the appointment.
Garcetti's nomination requires a simple majority on a recorded roll call vote to pass, but Republicans have held up previous Biden appointees by placing "holds" on their nominations.
If faced with Republican obstructionism, Democrats can enact a "hotline" vote to pass Garcetti's nomination through unainmous consent, without debate.
