In response to how President Joe Biden's administration has handled the crisis at the southern border, GOP Governors Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas have begun sending planes and buses of migrants across the country.
Gov. Abbott recently sent migrants to Vice President Kamala Harris's home in Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., while DeSantis sent two planes full of migrants to Martha's Vineyard.
Harris recently shared her thoughts on the actions of the two governors in an interview with VICE News, saying that they are "playing games" with human beings.
"These are political stunts with real human beings who are fleeing harm," Harris told VICE News. "I think it is the height of irresponsibility… frankly, a dereliction of duty, when you are an elected leader, to play those kinds of games with human life."
Harris called the actions of DeSantis and Abbott nothing more than "political stunts," adding that the migrants they shipped off were seeking asylum and "fleeing harm."
"I mean, do you know what's happening in Venezuela right now? There were children, people being put on a bus or a plane who didn't know where they're going or where they were being sent," the vice president said. "Human beings, real people who have fled harm, who came to the United States of America seeking refuge, asylum."
When asked what Harris thinks should be done to solve the situation at the border, she pointed the finger and said that Trump's administration "decimated" the system in place, adding that they have been working to fix it for the last 18 months.
"The first piece of legislation that we offered, back in January of last year, was for a pathway for citizenship," Harris said, noting that it isn't going anywhere as people continue to play "political games."
She continued by saying she is in charge of coordinating a "root causes strategy" that aims to help people stay in their home countries. Harris noted they had raised $3.2 billion for the cause as of last week.
Gov. DeSantis shared in a press conference the day after the planes he sent landed in Massachusetts that undocumented immigrants looking for residence should not come to Florida or Texas but instead to welcoming states.
"Our message to them is we are not a sanctuary state," DeSantis said to cheers from the crowd. "It's better to be able to go to a sanctuary jurisdiction, and yes, we will help facilitate that transport for you to go to greener pastures."
Meanwhile, President Biden said last week that the two top Republicans' actions are nothing short of unethical.
"What they're doing is simply wrong," the U.S. president said on Friday. "It's un-American, it's reckless, and we have a process in place to manage migrants at the border. We're working to make sure it's safe and orderly and humane."
