Anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to a pet knows it is a painful experience.

In fact, 88% of pet owners considered their pets to be family, according to an American Psychiatric Association poll from last year. Now, a biotech company is working to make sure these family members get to stick around longer.

“It’s a preventative medicine strategy,” said Dr. Brennen McKenzie of Loyal, the company working on medication to help dogs live longer. “We’re not treating a disease. “We’re treating some of the underlying risks that lead to a whole bunch of different diseases.”

One of the company’s medicines – LOY-002 – is in the clinical study phase and could hit the market as early as next year. McKenzie joined “Something Offbeat” to explain how the medication would work and what dog owners should expect from it.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
