While Americans cast their ballots, plenty of people overseas are keeping a close eye on the results.
The winner of the presidential race will have a massive impact on countries around the globe, especially our closest allies. Jack Kessler, a columnist for London’s West End Final newsletter, and Tomer Marshall, CEO of Israeli tech company Tribe Effects, joined KNX News’ daily political show Countdown 2024 to give their takes on the race.
Listen here:
Kessler said that in the U.K., Vice President Harris has a 46-point lead in popularity over former President Donald Trump.
“I think people in Britain find Trump's policies, his personality, some of the things he said and done, not least an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, quite unfathomable,” he said. “There are also some specific policy issues, whether it's tariffs on U.K. goods or Trump's views on NATO and European security more widely, particularly with regards to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
But it’s a very different story in Israel – a survey conducted in September found that 58% of Israelis preferred another Trump presidency.
“I'm quite shocked at only that number and not a much higher number because here we're at war and these elections are very important to see how this war will go on,” Marshall said. “People feel that there is a very strong need for change in this administration and would like to see Trump back in the White House with a much more stronger stance against radical Islam and things that are going on in this area.”
Marshall said that while Harris is friendly to Israel, Trump seems to have a “much stronger alignment on the level of values.”
As for the Brits, Kessler said another Trump term could bring “a lot of chaos and unknowns,” while a Harris presidency would be more of the same for the U.K.
“But I think the point to restate is that the U.K. is very keen on what we call the special relationship and will work with any U.S. administration of any party,” he added.
