A holiday shopping season nightmare was realized by a discovery in an Alabama forest.

A FedEx delivery driver is undergoing questioning after about 400 undelivered packages were discovered abandoned in a ravine about 30 miles north of Birmingham.

The driver is said to be cooperating with investigators and is no longer actively delivering packages for FedEx Ground, who released a statement to AL.com regarding the incident.

“We have reviewed this situation and can confirm the individual involved is no longer providing service on behalf of FedEx Ground,” the statement read. “The security of our customers’ shipments is a top priority and we are committed to treating our customers’ packages with the utmost care.

“We regret the inconvenience this situation has caused and appreciate our customers’ understanding throughout the package recovery process. Where possible, recovered packages are being delivered to the intended recipients. In the event of a damaged shipment, we will make every effort to work with the affected shippers to reach a resolution.”

The shipping giant said it will deliver packages that are able to be recovered and will be in contact with customers regarding resolving outstanding shipments that are damaged.

“We are taking steps to recover and transport the affected packages as quickly as possible,” the company said. “In addition to cooperating with law enforcement, we are conducting a review of this situation and will take the appropriate action.”

Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon had deputies guard the area until the packages could be retrieved, a process that required multiple FedEx trucks and drivers from across the south.

In regards to why the packages were there, Moon said in a Facebook post that he doesn’t have an answer for that yet.

“There have been many questions coming in, mainly from media, regarding the FedEx debacle,” the post read. “Investigators have been speaking to FedEx security personnel and the driver has been identified and questioned. More to come, please be patient as we are currently getting into all the details. All the information that we can share will be shared when we can share it.”
