Kia recalls 410,000 vehicles over airbag issue, offers free fix

LOS ANGELES — Kia announced a recall affecting the airbags of 410,500 vehicles Friday, offering a free fix for owners with the involved vehicles. The recall includes 2017 Forte Koup coupes, 2017-2018 Forte sedans and 2017-2019 Sedona minivans, Soul and Soul EV hatchbacks.

The automaker said the problem revolves around an “electrical issue with the airbag control unit (ACU), according to Consumer Reports. The unit is responsible for determining when to deploy airbags in a crash.

All repairs related to the recall are offered free at Kia dealers. To check if your vehicle is affected, enter your VIN number at the automaker’s site here. 

There have been no crashes or injuries related to the report, according to Consumer Reports. However, the consumer organization found 13 complaints and 947 warranty claims related to the recall in documents provided by Kia to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
