A basketball game in a North Carolina backyard quickly turned violent on Wednesday, with two adults and one child being shot, according to local police.

The Gaston County Police Department shared in a press release that the man believed to have carried out the shooting is Robert Louis Singletary, 24. As of Wednesday, he was still at large, police shared.

A witness who observed the shooting told WBTV it began when a family playing basketball had the ball roll into Singletary’s yard.

“They were playing basketball, and a ball rolled into his yard, and they went to go and get it,” Jonathan Robertson told WBTV. “It was just crazy.”

The shooting took place at 7:44 p.m. on Tuesday. Police said they received a call that a man, now believed to be Singletary, was firing off a gun outside homes in the neighborhood.

According to police, an adult male and his child were shot and left seriously injured. They were taken to a local hospital for care. Another adult woman was grazed by a bullet, and another man was shot but not seriously injured.

Singletary is now wanted on four counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

“I want to say to the people of Gaston County — this sort of violence will not stand,” Chief Stephen Zill said in a press release.

The police department is working with the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, as Singletary is believed to be armed and dangerous.

The investigation remains ongoing at this point. The department also shared it is offering a $1,000 reward for information that aids with the investigation.

WBTV also spoke with two of the victims, William White and his 6-year-old daughter, who explained what they saw happen.

“The bullet came back, and the bullet went in my cheek,” the little girl told the media outlet. “I want him to go to jail forever.”
