A woman has died from coronavirus just three weeks after giving birth to a baby boy.
Erika Becerra, 33, was first diagnosed with COVID-19 last month while she was eight months into her pregnancy with son, according to CBS LA.
To protect the safety of the mother, and infant doctors decided to induce Becerra on Nov. 15, the outlet reported. She was intubated right after delivering a healthy baby boy named Diego Antonio Baccerra.
Becerra was originally from Los Angeles, but recently moved to Detroit with her husband and one-year-old daughter. She was never able to hold her son before she died, Becerra's brother Michael Avilez told CBS LA.
"She had a normal labor, she gave birth to her son, but didn't get to hold him because right after she gave birth, that's when they put in the tube and then from there she just started declining," Avilez told the outlet while crying.
"Towards the last moments, she was tearing up. I know she heard us as we prayed for her, we talked to her, we comforted her in the last moments," he said.
"I know God needed her more than I did and with open arms, we gave her to God last night," Avilez added, speaking on Dec. 4.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the family to cover travel and all additional funeral expenses.
"All my sister wanted was the best for everybody and she cared about lives. She didn't deserve to go through what she went through," Avilez told CBS LA, adding that he doesn't understand why there are people not taking the virus seriously.
"It's is a real thing," he said of COVID-19. "I don't know why people don't comprehend that."
Becerra reportedly had no underlying conditions besides her pregnancy. Her husband and two children have since tested negative for the virus.
