According to a recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, almost 6-in-10 Americans (58%) say they are either very concerned or concerned that people who are not eligible to vote will vote or that voters will cast a ballot more than once.
Republicans are the most worried, with 68% saying they're concerned about voter fraud, compared to 55% of independents and 33% of Democrats.
Part of what's fueling the concern is former President Donald Trump's "continued false insistence that elections can't be trusted," following his disproven claims of widespread voter fraud costing him the 2020 election, according to NPR.
"Local election officials say they've spent countless hours trying to educate voters on the checks and balances that make fraud unlikely and rare, but it's unclear those efforts have made much of a dent," NPR reported. "And they worry the stage is set for Trump again to try to overturn the results, or for his followers to commit violence, if they feel the election was stolen from him."
Another other top concern is international election interference.
According to the poll, two in three Americans (66%) say they're either very concerned or concerned that foreign countries will interfere with this year's elections.
A majority of Americans (52%) are also concerned or very concerned that people who are not U.S. citizens will be able to vote this year.
Republicans are more concerned that people who are not citizens would cast a ballot, with 81% saying they doubt the process followed by 53% of independents and 25% of Democrats.
Data shows voting by non-citizens is rare.
Despite their concerns, more than 3 in 4 Americans are confident in election integrity. According to the poll, 76% of Americans say they are very confident or confident that state and local government will carry out a fair and accurate election this November, versus 24% who aren't convinced.
