Hasbro announced that Mr. Potato Head will now be known as "Potato Head."
The toy, played with by countless children across the world, will have a more gender neutral name.
The new name will be on boxes this year.
Hasbro had to send out a clarifying tweet later on Thursday afternoon saying that while the brand has become more gender neutral, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head aren't going anywhere.
Gender will be removed from the brand but not the actual toys themselves, according to an updated AP story.
"Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere! While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the ‘MR.’ I yam proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD," Hasbro wrote in a tweet.
"As part of the rebranding, Hasbro will release a new Potato Head playset that will let kids create their own type of families, including two moms or two dads. The Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head characters will live on in some form, Hasbro said, but didn’t provide details," according to an Associated Press story.
Mr. Potato Head arrived on the toy scene in the 1950s and back then kids had to use their own veggies for the body.
