Museum apologizes following protests over collection of skulls of enslaved African Americans

A museum in Pennsylvania is under scrutiny after the discovery of its collection of skulls of Black Americans.

The Penn Museum has faced protests and has been forced to apologize for its collection of 1,300 human skulls housed in the Morton Collection.

The Morton Collection is named after Samuel G. Morton, a 19th-century Philadelphia physician, and anthropologist who collected hundreds of skulls to compare the brain sizes of different races. His work is said to be seminal in attempting to prove that European races (white races) were intellectually superior to those of African descent.

Morton wrote of the 'Ethiopian Race: "Characterized by a black complexion… the negro is joyous, flexible and indolent: while the many nations which compose this race present a singular diversity of intellectual character of which the far extreme is the lowest grade of humanity.:

At least 12 of the skulls belong to Black Philadelphians, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, and dozens from enslaved people from Africa to Cuba.

The museum's director, Christopher Woods announced Monday the museum would release control of the skulls.

"The Penn Museum and the University of Pennsylvania apologize for the unethical possession of human remains in the Morton Collection," Woods said in a statement.

"It is time for these individuals to be returned to their ancestral communities, wherever possible, as a step toward atonement and repair for the racist and colonial practices that were integral to the formation of these collections."

The decision to return the skulls to their "descendants and communities of origin" was made on April 8.

Police Free Penn, a student group that initially demanded the skulls be repatriated, told the Inquirer: "we're happy with this commitment to return all remains."
