After reports surfaced earlier this week that Twitter was planning on charging verified users $19.99 a month to keep their blue check marks, Elon Musk has walked the price back.
On Tuesday, Musk shared that he planned on charging $8 monthly for Twitter’s subscription service, “Twitter Blue.” He noted that anyone who pays for the service would have their accounts verified with the famous blue check mark.
Twitter Blue is not a new subscription service, but the company currently has it priced at $4.99 a month. The changes to it would include the price hike as well as the verification feature.
Musk has been increasingly critical of Twitter’s verification process, saying earlier this week that the process was being “revamped.” On Tuesday, he took it a step further while promoting the new price for his subscription service.
A previous report from CNN found that internal documents detailing the idea of offering the verification process for a fee also meant that those who didn’t pay would lose their blue checkmark.
Musk detailed his plans on his Twitter feed Tuesday, saying subscribers wouldn’t just get verified but also a priority in replies, mentions, and search, as well as the ability to post longer video and audio content while getting half the amount of ads as others do.
Musk also said that publishers who work with Twitter would be able to bypass the paywall.
“This will also give Twitter a revenue stream to reward content creators,” Musk tweeted.
The world’s richest man purchased the social media company for $44 billion, and since finalizing the deal, he has jumped right into the thick of it. In the last week, he has fired numerous positions and flirted with new concepts like his paid verification feature and bringing back the once-popular site Vine that Twitter purchased and then shut down.
While many remain critical of the billionaires’ ideas for Twitter, he continues to push the narrative that he does not care, stating it in a tweet last night about his subscription service.
“To all complainers, please continue complaining, but it will cost $8,” Musk said.
