NASA released its first report Thursday on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), more commonly known as UFOs. While the agency found no evidence that UAP are from outer space, they also aren’t sure where these weird objects do come from.
"The NASA independent study team did not find any evidence that UAP have an extraterrestrial origin, but we don't know what these UAP are,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said Thursday.
The independent study was commissioned to understand how NASA can contribute to the study of UAP. The team reviewed unclassified data from government agencies, commercial entities, and other sources, and found it was impossible to draw scientific conclusions from the limited evidence currently available.
"At present, analysis of UAP data is hampered by poor sensor calibration, the lack of multiple measurements, the lack of sensor metadata, and the lack of baseline data,” the report says. “Moving forward, NASA should contribute to a comprehensive, government-wide approach to collecting future data.”
The report doesn’t analyze previous UAP incidents in detail, but it does recommend that the agency continue studying and collecting data on the phenomena.
