Trials are underway for a drug known as VX 548, a powerful new medication that, if approved, could provide an alternative to strong opioid painkillers with one significant advantage- its creators say it works without the risk of addiction.

Paul Negulescu, Senior Vice President at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the company behind the novel drug, told KNX News Chief Correspondent Charles Feldman, "We studied people both in a post-operative setting, in the hospital following surgery, but we also studied a couple of hundred people that took the drug at home upon discharge. So we're aiming for a broad label with this medicine. A label from the FDA that says for the treatment of moderate to severe acute pain, and that could be applicable to many many people."

Negulescu says the plan is to file for FDA approval by the middle of 2024.

The drug works by blocking pain signals at their origin before they reach the brain.
