House Speaker Kevin McCarthy failed to garner enough support for a bill aimed at preventing a partial government shutdown.

Despite the bill's spending cuts, the Speaker's right-flank opposed it, calling it insufficient, and many within the government are blaming a group of more than 20 so-called 'MAGA Republicans'.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "The extreme part of the House Republicans - it's going to be their shutdown."

CBS's Scott Macfarlane says it's the same group of Republicans who forced 15 votes on McCarthy's nomination as Speaker.

Macfarlane said, "The fundamental issue is Kevin McCarthy is under significant pressure with such a small majority to get something passed through Republican votes only, and he can't do it because the margins are so small and not everybody's satisfied. If he puts something bipartisan on the floor, sure, it would pass, but it may cost him his job."

There are those who believe that a shutdown would have little noticeable impact, but Orange County Democratic Congresswoman Katie Porter strongly refutes that notion.

She told KNX News, "That is a bunch of elitist nonsense from people who don't know what it's like to look at bills and wonder how you're gonna pay them."

Porter said, "There are so many hardships that come with this, starting with millions of federal employees going without paychecks."

She fears the shutdown could last a long time because there has been no positive moment. As it stands, Porter believes the only option is a continuing resolution, but it seems the Republicans do not have enough members interested in making that happen.

If a deal is not agreed upon, this would be the fourth shutdown in the last ten years, just four months after a standoff that brought the government close to defaulting on its debt.
