Actress Salma Hayek revealed that her experience with Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein upset many of her friends, including actress Penélope Cruz.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Hayek said Cruz was "angry" that Hayek failed to confide in her friend.
Hayek opened up about her experiences with the producer, claiming Weinstein sexually harassed and bullied her during the filming of "Frida" in an op-ed for the New York Times in 2017.
"Some people were very angry at me, like Penélope [Cruz], but I was protecting her," Hayek said in the interview with the Sunday Times. "I kept my eye on their interaction and he never went for her. They [Miramax] were making the best movies. She didn't have my problem, and if I told her it would have affected her choices of things that would have been good for her career."
Cruz starred in several Weinstein-produced movies, including 2008's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, for which Cruz won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
In March 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree, according to CNN. He is serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York. Weinstein is also facing charges in California for assaulting five women in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills from 2004 to 2013. Earlier this month, a New York judge approved Weinstein's extradition to California for those charges.
