Former President Donald Trump shared his economic outlook for the nation heading into 2024, saying that he hopes an economic crash happens sometime in the next 12 months.
The comments from Trump came during an interview with Lou Dobbs that aired on Monday, in which he said if he is reelected, he would not want to serve a term similar to President Herbert Hoover’s.
President Hoover infamously took office when the economy was stable, though it later fell into the Great Depression.
During the interview, Trump shared his thoughts on the economy, which he said wasn’t all bad, taking credit for the successes.
“We have an economy that’s so fragile, and the only reason it’s running now is it’s running off the fumes of what we did,” Trump said. “It’s just running off the fumes.”
He continued, saying, “When there’s a crash — I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president I just don’t want to be, Herbert Hoover.”
The remarks from Trump come as the economy remains with its head above the water despite numerous predictions of an impending recession.
Experts have said the economy is in a good position, with inflation falling and job growth remaining strong.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen shared last Friday with CNN that the year is starting stronger than previously thought.
“What we’re seeing now, I think we can describe as a soft landing, and my hope is that it will continue,” Yellen said.
The Biden campaign seemingly responded to Trump’s comments in a post on X by quoting his remarks from a few days ago.
“President Biden three days ago: ‘Donald Trump’s campaign is about him. Not America. Not you,’” the statement read.
