According to multiple sources, former president Donald Trump has been indicted on multiple charges in connection with his handling of classified documents.
LISTEN:
Some of the seven counts he faces include conspiracy, willful retention, and obstruction.
Jonathan Lemire, the White House Bureau Chief for Politico and host of 'Way Too Early' on MSNBC, tells KNX we must not overlook the historic nature of this situation.
"This is the first former U.S. president ever to be indicted on federal charges, and that, of course, comes after Trump was the first former U.S. president to be indicted on state charges," Jonathan said.
He also says of the charges levied, the obstruction and conspiracy charges stand out the most.
"There are certainly penalties for having classified material when you shouldn't," Jonathan said, but typically, such as in the cases of former Vice President Mike Pence and President Joe Biden, when the government asks for the materials back, they obliged.
"Trump didn't, and that's why this is so different," Jonathan said.
In a separate interview with KNX, top legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Gene Rossi said - hate him or love him, the Trump indictment is a sad day in America:
While Princeton historian Julian Zelize tells KNX, the indictment isn't about politics:
Although the special counsel has not officially confirmed the charges, Trump broke the news on social media, saying he's been ordered to report to a Miami courtroom on Tuesday.
