Polls: Trump's approval rating among highest of either of his terms in the White House

A new poll has found that President Donald Trump’s hectic first few weeks in office are earning him high marks with the American people, as his latest approval rating is near the highest he’s ever seen.

Poll results come from the latest CBS News/YouGov poll, conducted in early February, which found that 53% of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing.

The poll highlighted the stark difference in how Americans view Trump now, compared to when he left office in early 2021, when just 33% approved of Trump overall, according to a Gallup poll from the time.

The approval ratings are also among the highest Trump has ever seen, when including ratings throughout his first term in office.

Other polls have also found similar results to the CBS poll, as Gallup reported in late January that Trump had a 47% approval rating at the time.

Trump’s early success with Americans could be a result of the firestorm of actions he’s carried out in his first few weeks back in the Oval Office. The CBS poll found that 59% of respondents approved of how Trump is handling immigration, which has involved mass deportations of those in the U.S. illegally.

Another issue Trump scored high on was his handling of the Israel-Hamas war, which 54% of supporters said they approved of.

Still, not everyone is agreeing with all of his policy actions, as the report found that a majority of Americans did not support placing tariffs on Canada, Mexico, or Europe, while a majority did support tariffing China. The poll also found that 66% of respondents don’t feel Trump is doing enough to lower prices.

When it comes to some of Trump’s more brazen comments, like wanting to “take over” the Gaza Strip, only 13% thought it was a good idea, while 47% said it wasn’t, and 40% remained unsure.

Despite approval of how quickly Trump has started to address key issues, mainly through executive actions, there have been dozens of legal challenges to Trump’s authority over certain issues, like his creation of DOGE and ending birthright citizenship.

Those cases will take time to play out, but the president continues to shift his focus to new issues daily, like when he ordered the Treasury to stop manufacturing the penny shortly after attending the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted from Feb. 5-7 and included responses from 2,175 U.S. adults. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 points.
