Following Fox News’ decision to part with long-time host Tucker Carlson last month, text messages from Carlson where he appeared to make racist remarks have recently surfaced.
The text messages from Carlson were sent to a producer for his show on Fox, as the two discussed the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on Capitol Hill.
“A couple of weeks ago, I was watching video of people fighting on the street in Washington,” Carlson texted. “A group of Trump guys surrounded an Antifa kid and started pounding the living s**t out of him. It was three against one, at least. Jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight. Yet suddenly I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it.”
In the text messages, Carlson continued, saying he does not condone violence.
“Then somewhere deep in my brain, an alarm went off: this isn’t good for me. I’m becoming something I don’t want to be,” Carlson continued. “The Antifa creep is a human being. Much as I despise what he says and does, much as I’m sure I’d hate him personally if I knew him, I shouldn’t gloat over his suffering. I should be bothered by it. I should remember that somewhere somebody probably loves this kid, and would be crushed if he was killed. If I don’t care about those things, if I reduce people to their politics, how am I better than he is?”
The text messages were first reported by The New York Times, and were initially redacted in court filings as one of the several private conversations collected in the lawsuit filed against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems.
The Times reported that the text messages were brought to the attention of Fox’s board of directors and directly played a role in Carlson’s abrupt firing last month.
The text messages are just the latest piece of information to come out about Carlson, as earlier this week videos of Carlson making other inappropriate comments on the set of his show, one of which where he called a woman “yummy,” were leaked to Media Matters for America.
“You wouldn’t. OK? I’m not, you know what, I’m not qualified on that score. I will say, I thought his girlfriend was kind of yummy,” Carlson can be heard saying, before adding “Just kidding, just kidding,” in case the video was being clipped.
Another video shows Carlson talking about inappropriate matters on his set.
“If we’re going to talk about sex, I’d love to hit some of the fine points of technique. But, you know, it’s your show. It’s totally up to you,” Carlson is seen saying in the video.
The media world was shocked by the abrupt split between Fox and Carlson, as he had been their top-rated host for some time. Still, the decision came following the media company’s $787.5 million settlement over its dissemination of election lies.
Fox has not commented on the text messages, leaked videos, or his parting from the company, other than saying, “We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor.”
