The Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association has requested help from the National Mediation Board.

The union and Southwest Airlines have been working on a new contract for more than two years. The union says the talks have not made any meaningful headway.

Bringing in the National Mediation Board means federally appointed mediators will asses the situation and try to bring the two sides closer together in their talks.

The Southwest Airlines Pilots' Association staged an informational picket outside Love Field in Dallas earlier this year to protest scheduling issues at the airline. They said those scheduling problems were causing increases in pilot fatigue.

Southwest Airlines issued a statement welcoming the involvement of the federal mediators and noting that the talks had included a pause of more than a year because of COVID-19.
