FBI identifies suspected Trump rally shooter — what we know

Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential candidate, was injured in a shooting event at a Pennsylvania campaign rally Saturday that included one fatality.

Here’s what we know about the suspected shooter so far:

The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Pennsylvania man Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park.

The gunman was immediately “neutralized” by the Secret Service, according to the agency’s chief of communications, Anthony Gugliemi. Law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle from the scene, which investigators believe was bought by Crooks' father at least six months ago.

According to the Associated Press, records show Crooks was registered as a Republican in Pennsylvania, but he gave $15 to a progressive political action committee on Jan. 20, 2021.

Crooks, who graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022, worked at a nursing home as a dietary aid. According to AP, he lived in an enclave of modest brick houses outside Pittsburgh about an hour's drive from the site of the Trump rally.

Butler County district attorney Richard Goldinger told AP that Crooks was previously unknown to investigators. The FBI said Sunday it hasn't yet identified any threatening writing or social media posts from Crooks, who appears to have acted alone.

No motive for the shooting is currently known, though law enforcement said on Saturday night that investigators were prioritizing it.

Images reviewed by AP show that Crooks appeared to have been wearing a T-shirt from Demolition Ranch, a YouTube channel that posts videos that show creator Matt Carriker firing handguns and assault rifles. Carriker didn't respond to a request for comment from AP, but posted a photo of Crooks' corpse wearing his brand's T-shirt on Instagram with the comment “What the hell.”

This is a breaking story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
