Election day is less than three weeks away, and it’s estimated that over 10 million Americans have voted early.
So where do things stand? Margaret Brennan, host of Face the Nation, joined KNX News’ daily political show Countdown 2024 to discuss the nail-biter presidential race.
Listen here:
“Our CBS polling shows that in those seven battleground states that are going to have a real influence on who wins the race in the end, it is neck and neck. It could go either way,” she said. “And so that, in my mind, you know, puts the focus on a few things. One is the ability to excite and drive up turnout.”
Over the past several elections, former President Donald Trump has managed to energize a segment of low-propensity voters who wouldn’t normally turn out to the polls – including many who wouldn’t have necessarily identified as Republicans before Trump came along, Brennan said.
Vice President Kamala Harris is trying to do the same, focusing on energizing young voters and college students – but will she succeed?
Brennan questioned whether there’s anything Harris can do to reach voters who haven’t already lined up behind her.
“One of the things I talk about with our colleague, Anthony Salvato, who runs our elections and surveys desk, is what he has seen over time, which is not so much that there are people left to persuade, but that people don't necessarily want to be persuaded,” she said. “This is what's concerning to me, that they're sort of just living in parallel universes to each other where if their guy with the right jersey says it, it must be true, and the other one might be false.”
Brennan called this concerning because “information is the currency” of a democracy.

“If you can't believe, you know, or have an agreed upon set of facts, that's super dangerous,” she said.
