Will the omicron variant keep people from traveling?

COVID variants

CHICAGO (WBBM) — The omicron variant had some passengers coming through O’Hare at the end of the busy holiday break wondering about future trips.

For some, the new variant is not going to alter their travel plans.

"No, never," one man told WBBM Newsradio.

"I have the vaccine, and we are protected with masks and everything's fine," said another.

Passengers WBBM Newsradio spoke to at O’Hare Airport on Sunday were not coming from countries on the travel ban list.

One woman was returning to Mina Gerais in Brazil after her first flights in almost two years. She said the new variant will make her more cautious.

"I prefer to stay home and don't go out...if my family were to get infected, it would be so sad, and that's why I prefer to stay home," she said.

The World Health Organization said Brazil has a higher COVID death rate than the US, but fewer cases.

The Montoya family, from Hammond, has also been more cautious about traveling, and aren’t sure how to plan with this new uncertainty.

"You can't. You don't know how. You can't. You don't want to take a risk and get sick, you know," one family member said.

"Not much is known about this variant, so how can you take that chance?" another said.
