Less than a year after the latest failed recall attempt against Gov. Gavin Newsom, another recall campaign has been launched.
Randy Economy, founder of the Saving California coalition, officially announced the effort Thursday. Economy was also involved in Newsom’s 2021 recall attempt – the only one of seven such efforts that made it onto the ballot.
Economy said he feels the eighth time might be the charm, citing Newsom’s handling of the recent fires and the high cost of living in the state.
“I think a jock itch is a little bit more popular than Gov. Newsom right now,” he told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “Even members of his own party are questioning his ability to lead. Many of them have reached out to me privately, so I know what the mood of the electorate is, and I know what the mood of the leaders are here in the state, and I think everybody right now just needs a change.”
Economy said it doesn’t matter that Newsom only has two years left in office.
“When you look at when Gray Davis was recalled, he was recalled halfway during his second term,” he said.

In a statement to KTLA, Newsom’s office said the recall effort was launched by “the same group of far-right Trump acolytes” that was behind the previous seven failed attempts, noting that even Republican leaders have called the recalls “a brazen campaign finance ‘grift.’”
The recall petition needs more than a million signatures to qualify for the statewide ballot.
