You can thank bees for every third bite of food you take

LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Bees.

Some love them, some hate them, and Hollywood had Jerry Seinfeld voice one (“Ya like jazz?”)

So, what’s all the buzz about? How do bees impact your everyday life, even out of view?

Thor Hanson, biologist and author of "Buzz: The Nature and Necessity of Bees," said on "I've Got Questions with Mike Simpson" that they’re a big deal when it comes to food (and not just honey).

“Bees are responsible for as much as one out of every three bites of food in the human diet,” he said.  “And not just the quantity of food, but the quality, the spices and the sauces and things that make foods interesting. Many of those things are pollinated by bees.”

They help put food on the table. But bees can still get a bad rap, even though they aren’t out to do you harm. Wasps may be however.

“They're looking for protein to take back home to feed their young back at the nest,” Hanson said, calling them “hunters.”

But if you think the difference in bees comes down to bumble bees, honeybees, and wasps, think again.

Hanson said there are 20,000 types of bees who live very different lifestyles.
