Congressional candidate Cori Bush explains why she wants to 'defund the Pentagon'

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Cori Busch says the criticism she's received about her plans to "defund the Pentgon" if elected to Congress next month has gone all the way to the White House.

The Democratic congressional candidate from St. Louis, who defeated longtime incumbent Lacy Clay Jr. in the primary, responded on Twitter to President Donald Trump, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson and others who have been bashing her idea.

In a long thread, she noted that "at least 3 generations of my family have served this country in the military." It came after some who have been in support of her campaign distanced themselves from Bush's latest comment.

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and candidate for Missouri governor Nicole Galloway tweeted that they're not in support of Bush's idea.

Bush's original tweet stated, "If you're having a bad day, just think of all the social services we're going to fund after we defund the Pentagon."

She did not backtrack from that idea in her latest tweets.

"As a Black woman running for office, I’m used to these kinds of attacks," Bush stated. "Yes I want to change our priorities. We can fund Medicare for All, guarantee housing, and enact a Green New Deal. We can make sure no veteran goes unhoused or without care. We can have a government that actually works for us."
